01/22/08 The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan
The Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan is seeking two full-time clinical-track faculty members to work on the Adult Psychiatry Inpatient Unit and Adult Consultation-Liaison Service. Both positions are assigned to the Hospital Services Section which includes Adult Inpatient, Adult Consultation-Liaison, and Psychiatry Emergency Services. The successful candidate will participate in the clinical, administrative, and teaching aspects of the adult inpatient, consultation-liaison and emergency psychiatry programs.
Adult Inpatient Unit
The current 22-bed Adult Inpatient Unit at University Hospital treats the full spectrum of psychiatric disorders including a growing number of psychiatry patients with medical needs. Occupancy averages 90% or better; length of stay averages approximately 8 days. About 20% of patients are medically ill, with a severity similar to those patients found in an acute aftercare facility. Primary clinical responsibilities will be on the Psychiatry Inpatient Unit.
The successful candidate will participate in the clinical, administrative, and teaching aspects of the adult inpatient, emergency, and consultation-liaison psychiatry programs. S/he will have ample opportunity to join an inpatient clinical redesign initiative with the goals of innovative continuity of care affiliations with a state-of-the-art University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center and Substance Abuse Treatment Services and with other components of the department’s ambulatory care programs.
The inpatient unit is in the process of making several programmatic changes to enhance the overall quality of care. Continuity of care is one key feature of these enhancements. The Psychiatry Inpatient Unit quality of weekend care has the same quality characteristics as weekday care. Accordingly, and in order to preserve continuity of care throughout the week, the hospitalist hired will be expected to provide patient care services on weekends. Consistent with expectations for general medical hospitalists in University of Michigan Hospital, psychiatry hospitalist weekend work will be limited to about 12 weekends per year.
Additionally, planning for a new expanded inpatient unit is underway has started. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be successful in this position. Because of the increasing medical complexity of patients on this unit and throughout the hospital, a familiarity and comfort with medical issues in necessary; completion of a residency in Internal Medicine and recognition by the American Board of Internal Medicine or similar recognition is desirable but is not required.
Academic interests are encouraged. Programmatic research is not expected and specific protected time to do research is not allocated. For those interested in research, the Department of Psychiatry and affiliated institutes at the University of Michigan provide state-of-the-art research facilities.
Consultation-Liaison Service:
The Consultation-Liaison program receives approximately 120 requests per month for initial consultations; while these patients remain in the medical-surgical hospital, follow-up care is provided to most of them. For hospitalized patients, these consultation services provide 24 hour access to psychiatric consultations. In addition, psychiatric liaisons with specific inpatient medical specialty units provide ongoing access to mental health specialists.
Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary to be successful in this position. Because of the increasing medical complexity of patients throughout the hospital, a familiarity and comfort with medical issues is necessary; completion of a Psychosomatic Medicine residency or residency in Internal Medicine and recognition by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology or the American Board of Internal Medicine or similar recognition is desirable.
The Consultation-Liaison program is in the process of expanding to a two-team model, with attending physicians expected to participate in both the initial and subsequent visits of patients referred to the service. Additionally, there is opportunity to participate in the development of a psychiatry rapid response team to assist medical/surgical staffs in the de-escalation of patients on their units.
Qualification:
A doctor of Medicine/Osteopathy is required. Possession of a current license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is necessary; must be Board-certified in Psychiatry. Applicants for the Inpatient Unit need to have hospital-based psychiatry as the primary feature of his or her career. Candidates for the C/L position need to have psychosomatic medicine as the primary feature of his or her career.
Applicants must have demonstrated promise for an academic career that emphasizes clinical care, teaching and administration. Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are necessary and be an active member in good standing of the University of Michigan Medical staff. Under Michigan Law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of employment or transfer for this position. Completion of a residency in Internal Medicine and recognition by the American Board of Internal Medicine or similar recognition is desirable but is not required.
Qualified candidates should forward curriculum vitae and the names of five referees to:
