Alvin P. Shapiro Award

Home / Awards / Alvin P. Shapiro Award

Please note that 2011 was the last year that the Alvin P. Shapiro Award Lecture was offered.

The Alvin P. Shapiro Award Lecture was established in the fall of 2001 through the generosity of his family to recognize his work as an internist and clinical pharmacologist who conducted innumerable studies on behavioral and psychosocial influences on hypertension and cardiovascular health. Dr. Shapiro was an active member of APS and served as the Society’s president in 1974-1975.

The Shapiro Award was given for a period of 10 years to a physician in recognition of their scholarly contributions to the understanding of psychosocial factors in the clinical care of patients in a primary care setting. The ten recipients of the Alvin P. Shapiro Award each presented a unique and thoughtful lecture during the APS Annual Meeting in the year in which the award was presented.
